Hello! The Olympic Games began in Tokyo last weekend – I confess that I have just been watching so far – taking it all in and resting after the work around the Tour de France.

For the first few days, it almost feels like a bombardment of sport, I rather enjoy the first week, because there is so much variety to see and enjoy. I like the different locations both indoor and outside and it’s these early events that give the viewer at home a feel for the location and how these special games are going to be.

So having taken a breath, I found that I soon wanted to start making pictures so I will post selected things that catch my eye and interest – from the point of view of making art and not necessarily illustrating performances.

Here is the first of these images – which I loved making – The challenge was the men’s gymnastic team event, where one discipline is followed by another so quickly. I made the pictures with several sketchbooks and papers on the go at the same time and moved between them – It was great!

Work setup, including the vault

This one of the vault discipline – which was just exhilarating! Lovely to watch and lovely to make – it’s a return to a more abstract approach, which I like. I used the fan brush to indicate the twists and turns as he flew through the air and the watercolour paint helped the image by flowing just beautifully – sometimes, it feels as though I’m there as a bystander almost, just guiding the paint and letting it do its ‘thing’!

I hope you like it too!

Olympic Farewell

Hello! The success of the Paralympic Games in Sochi was great to see. Team GB were the UK’s most successful Winter Olympians ever, simply amazing. I’ve made a collection of drawings from both events as a new page, with a little reminder here. Spring is well on its way and time to leave the snow behind. Thank you for following, see you very soon. Here are my drawings:

Olympic Greys

Hello! Something of a contrast today in Sochi, where the snow came down in an almighty blizzard. Colour obliterated by very harsh conditions which pushed athletes to their limits, but still a great day of skiing. Here are my drawings:

Olympic Girl Power!

Hello! How wonderful it is to see Sochi again with the start of the Paralympic Games! This post is dedicated to the brilliant Team GB skiers, Kelly Gallagher and Jade Etherington with their guides, Charlotte Evans and Caroline Powell. Brilliant performances from them have seen a haul of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, the first British women so to do. Brilliant! Here are my drawings:

Olympic blues

Hello! The last few days coming up. I noticed that there are many shades of blue all over the place – not least in the eyes of Team GB’s Women’s Curling team, which I have found very difficult to capture! But there is the blue of the night sky, blues of team uniforms and the emotional blues that this great event is coming to an end. Here are my drawings:

Olympic Thrills and spills

Hello! Back to sporting action – a selection of thrills and spills. Whether indoors on the ice or outside in the sunshine or even in snowflakes the size of dinner-plates, they’re all wonderful to see! Here are my drawings:

Olympic Sunshine

Olympics, sochi

Hello! The past three days have been so packed with sport, I confess to playing catch up! Part of my problem is that I’ve been distracted by the beauty of the mountains and scenery at Sochi – very, very beautiful. The weather was glorious at the weekend, today there is rain but either way, the mountains are breathtaking. Here are my drawings:

Olympic Ice Gold

Hello! Day 7 was unique for British sports fans. On St Valentine’s Day 1984, the Gold Medal for Ice Dance was won by Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. 30 years on, also on St Valentine’s Day, the Gold Medal for Women’s Skeleton was won by Elizabeth Yarnold. Both events breathtaking and both brilliant. Amazing achievements that we’ll remember here for a long time to come. Here are my drawings:

Olympic Flight

Hello! Day 6 saw an incredible competition in the Men’s Ski Slopestyle. Fantastic competitors from all over the world but it was clean sweep of medals for the skiers from the USA, who were simply magnificent. Great lads! Here are my drawings:

Olympic sunshine

Hello! Day 5 began in glorious sunshine for the Women’s Downhill event. A great course put all to the test but the outcome was a gold medal for two women, Dominique Gisin of Switzerland and Tina Maze of Slovenia – who flew down the run in 1:41.57. Wonderful! Here are my drawings:

Olympic precision

Hello! Day 4 began with another incredible contest in the air with Ski Slopestyle. Ladies first and all GB fans watching Katie Summerhayes who put in a great performance at her first Olympics. A fine win for Canada’s Dara Howell. By complete contrast, the curling continues and the beginning of the half-pipe featuring the legendary Shaun White. It’s another engrossing day! Olympic thrills and spills!

Hello! Third day at Sochi saw an amazing Men’s Short-track contest. Amazing progress by GB’s Jack Whelbourne only to see him fall in the final but wonderful achievement for Canadian Charles Hamelin, 3rd Gold for him. Also great mogul skiing and ice hockey and still more – phew! Another great day! Here are my drawings:

Olympic extras

Hello! I’m still so excited by the wonderful slopestyle contests from the past 2 days – I thought I’d post a few extras before turning to the proper business of Day 3! Here are my drawings:

Olympic lows and highs

Hello! Second day at Sochi saw an amazing Men’s Downhill – heartbreak for my favourite skier Bode Miller, but an incredible run for Austria’s Matthias Mayer. A fine win for Jamie Anderson in the Women’s Slopestyle and a bronze medal for GB’s Jenny Jones. What a day! Here are my drawings:

Olympic grace

Hello! Suddenly a complete change of direction! A must see though – the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. The first day has seen some fantastic sport but my first post looks at Ice Dancing from the Team Figure Skating event. Some lovely routines – very romantic and in the run-up to Valentine’s Day, very appropriate! Here are my drawings:

Diving High

Hola! The World Championships for Diving and Swimming took place recently in the spectacular city of Barcelona. It was a great return to the pools used 21 years ago for the Olympics in 1992. A breathtaking outdoor location for diving, which was phenomenal! Here are my drawings:

Anniversary Games 2013: London

Hello! This weekend saw the return of the much-missed Olympic spirit to London in the form of the Anniversary Games. A great idea and the beautiful Queen Elizabeth Stadium was packed to see the stars from London 2012. They did not disappoint. A wonderful warm-up for the upcoming World Championships. Day 1 saw a great high jump contest and the magnificent Usain Bolt, while Day 2 saw a great women’s 100m, long jump and the return of Super Saturday stars, Jessica Ennis-Hill and the Mobot himself, Mo Farrah. Here are my drawings:

Another great day

Another great day of sporting excellence. No medals for Team GB but still wonderful performances by all athletes. Drawing so many sports makes for a different challenge from following one. For example with diving, I had to show the progress of the dive in the one drawing. It is two views of the same dive. Here are a few impressions some of the day’s incredible variety of sport.

A bit late to the party…

But what a party?  The Olympic Games has been wonderful so far – a delight. I’ve been drawing on and off since the Games started, but a bit late posting to say the least! I hope better late than never. There’s so much happening, it’s impossible to cover it all but I will do what I can. Here are some drawings to start with from an amazing few days in London.
