Andratx – Almonds and olives

Andratx, Almonds and olives - two original watercolour paintings by Maxine Dodd from the Mallorca Challenge cycle race, May 2021

Just as January really starts to bite and feels like SUCH a long month, the Mallorca Challenge cycle race pops up over the last weekend and brightens the new year, heralding a new cycling season and the promise of Spring.

Loving Andratx – Challenge Mallorca 2021

This year’s race takes place over five days for the first time but last year’s was moved to May because of the continuing Covid-19 crisis. January was the longest of all last year!

The series of races coming in May was still a treat and here are two paintings I made from the TV coverage, in the countryside around Andratx. The pictures were made together – as you can see from the colours – the olives in the title could easily refer to the colour of my paint, as well as the trees themselves. I think this is the UAE team because of the flashes of red but don’t take my word and please feel free to correct me!

I like them together as a pair – and I am showing them here arranged horizontally but they look good stacked vertically too – Ideal for one of those awkward spaces! What do you think?

Meanwhile, this year’s series is on just now, so I am looking forward to sharing some new paintings with you soon – Have a great weekend!

Just remember, it’s nearly February! Spring on its way 🙂

Euros 2021: Kalvin Phillips – You’re not having that!

Looking back over work made during the summer – This was a picture that was a joy to do and a joy to watch – Kalvin Phillips is a passionate player, so determined to keep the ball no matter what the pressure.

I made this one from the match against Croatia, where he ‘announced’ his presence right from the start. The Croatian player was definitely not having the ball – it was Kalvin’s!

I love his style!

Tour de France 2020: Stage 21 – Paris On the Champs! – SOLD

Stage 21, Paris – On the Champs! SOLD

The race on Stage 21, truly begins when the riders reach the Champs-Élysées, the beautiful avenue that runs up to the Arc de Triomphe, one of the most famous roads in the world.

It is the race for the sprinters, but to see that long peloton disappearing into the distance is incredible. Usually packed with fans at the roadside, it was eerily quiet in 2020, no Norwegian corner and people crowding around, as they should be. However, those there were treated to the fly past by the Patrouille de France, streaming the colours of the nation behind them as the race began in earnest below.

Still magic, still the Champs-Élysées!

The Meeting of the shirts

The meeting of the shirts, watercolour, pen and ink by Maxine Dodd

I really enjoy making pictures of the iconic four Jerseys of the Tour de France and this is one of my favourites.

Usually, the best time to do this is before the start or during the rollout. Stage 19 of 2020 race had some great views of the four of them waiting and chatting before the day’s work began.

So here they are, the four best riders in each class at this point of the race, from left to right, Richard Carapaz, (Ineos Grenadiers), King of the Mountains, Primož Roglič, (Jumbo Visma), Yellow Jersey, Tadej Pogačar, (UAE), Best Young Rider, Sam Bennett, Deceuninck–Quick-Step, Best Sprinter.

Bennett went on to win in Paris and retained his Green Jersey, while Tadej Pogačar took the rest, a feat he repeated this year in remarkable style.

Tour de France 2021 – Stage 6, Cavendish in Green! – SOLD

The triumphant Return of the Manx Missile, Mark Cavendish continued today – as he returned to Chateauroux, the scene of his very first victory at the Tour in 2008.

Cavendish claimed his 32nd stage win at the Tour de France moving another step closer to the all-time record of 34 held by Belgian legend Eddy Merckx.

By Stage 13, he took his fourth victory in the 2021 race and his 34rd overall, matching Eddy Merckx’s all-time record of 34 Tour stage wins.

Another fantastic achievement in the Manx man’s remarkable career – What will he do next?

Leicester City v Manchester Utd – Oct 2021: Iheanacho takes the ball

Iheanacho v Pogba – Leicester City v Man Utd, October 2021 – Leicester Open 32: The People’s Exhibition 2021

The Foxes versus the Red Devils at the King Power Stadium on Saturday promised to be a tasty game… although Leicester has had what you could kindly call a ‘mixed’ start to the season.

Saturday saw an apparently new team come out to play the super squad of Manchester Utd – Mostly the same faces but my word – new attitude, new confidence and new purpose! Absolutely wonderful to see and whilst it must be a painful start to the weekend for fans of Manchester Utd – they have some extraordinary players who are just a joy to watch as well.

My first image shows a little tussle at the start between Paul Pogba and Kelechi Iheanacho, who was not standing for any nonsense and took the ball away. Interesting fashion note with Pogba was that he had blue and white dreadlocks – I was surprised!

Great afternoon and such a wonderful game that will live long in the memory of Leicester City fans! Lovely to see them back! 🙂

Racing Lines Lookback: Paris Roubaix 211.4km

Hello! I have looking back lately, as next year sees the tenth anniversary of launching my blog and website, ‘Racing Lines’. I want to celebrate this milestone and invite you to join me to look back over my archive of paintings and drawings made with watercolour, pen and ink, with the occasional dab of pastel – all of them inspired by sport, movement and fleeting moments. They will be selected at random – just finding pictures I like and sharing again for fun! I am going to categorise them as ‘Racing Lines Lookback’ so they are easy to find.

This first picture is was made during a Paris Roubaix race, I think around 2016 or 2017 – I hadn’t scanned it, so the year wasn’t noted. If you recognise it, let me know! I really liked the colours and the big foot of the rider at the front. I shall seek out more Paris Roubaix as the great Spring Classic will be held in October! A topsy turvy world still!

Have a great Thursday!
