Yellow fields of Whitby, by Maxine Dodd

Getting ready…

Hello!  It’s been a busy Spring time and a bit of a strange one – In the UK we had a heatwave in February, the warmest Easter on record and now we look forward to frosts and possibly snow at the start of May. It is the UK though, so we know to expect the unexpected. Speaking personally, it’s been a time of transition and reflection – I have recently had the urge to paint again – alongside working with favourite pens and watercolour. It’s a much slower process but very good. More on that to come in future posts…but…

cycling, Tour de France

A winding road…

The autumn is coming to a close – in parts of the UK, the winter has begun even… Here in Leicestershire, it’s all gone a bit dark and gloomy, damp and murky… So to cheer up a bit, here’s a reminder of the Tour de France, and one of my favourite subjects, a lovely long peloton following a lovely winding road – all sunshine, trees and peace, what could be better? Have a good weekend, and if you have sunshine and your bike, go out enjoy them while you can! 🙂   Click on the image to see full details…

Mallorca Classic

Fantastic end to our holiday in Mallorca, the fourth stage of the Mallorca Classic bike race, which started and finished in the Port. The route climbed into the Serra de Tramuntana, challenging climbs with very strong winds. These are a few of my sketches, some I added colour to afterwards but the others I left as ink drawings which I may develop further when we settle back home.

cycling, la vuelta

La Vuelta a España -2018: Stage 1 – Kwiatowski riding past the people – study

Hola! Here’s my last sketch study from the time trial on Stage 1, this time showing Team Sky’s Michal Kwiatowski approaching the line at great speed to take the lead. His team mate Dylan van Baarle had held set a great time early on, but Kwiatowski put in a tremendous time, looking as though he would take his first stage win. It was not to be, but this moment looked great – at least for a while!

La Vuelta a España -2018: Stage 1 – Campanaerts holds nothing back – study

Hola! Here’s another study from the time trial on Stage 1, this one an experiment with water soluble pastels on black paper, which gives a great contrast for the colour. The rider is Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Soudal) who charged to the line with what looked like a combination of determination and brute force to achieve his place on the podium – wonderful to see!

La Vuelta a España -2018: Stage 1 – Rohan ready to go – study

Hola! Here’s my next piece based on this year’s Vuelta – another from Stage 1, this time a study of Rohan Dennis waiting to start his time trial. He rode a phenomenal stage – he is a gifted time triallist, along with his team, BMC.  The picture shows him calmly waiting to go, but I wanted to convey the anticipation by using strong lines – I like the contrast and feel this would work up into a bigger piece perhaps – that’s for another time but here he is… waiting.

cycling art, la vuelta, watercolour, 'bathed in gold'

La Vuelta a España -2018: Stage 1 – Malaga, Bathed in gold

Hola! This year’s Tour of Spain got underway in the south, with an individual time trial in the late afternoon. This first sketch shows Team Sky’s Michal Kwiatowski setting out on his ride, against the setting sun. The sun was low in the sky, bathing the city in a golden light – even the sea looked golden, so I called this, ‘Bathed in gold’
