Stage 21, Paris. The flag that flies suspended from the arch of the Arc du Triomphe, is a favourite element of the Paris stage, as is the monument at the top of the Champs Elysee itself. It’s great to see the peloton hurtling round this iconic landmark. It’s been a heck of a race this time, so much to take from it, as ever. The only sad sight to see this year for me, a final podium with two riders and two mannequins wearing the jerseys that Pogacar had won but couldn’t put on. Is that a worry? I hope not… I shall be back again next year to find out !

Stage 21 – Paris, and the one where Mark Cavendish breaks Merckx’s record and wins 35 stages….but sadly the fairytale finish wasn’t to be. The stage began well, but towards the climax, Cavendish became separated from his lead out man, and instead took up position on the wheels of Wout Van Aert. He was side by side with Jasper Philipsen and couldn’t get past. Van Aert took his third stage win with phenomenal strength and Cavendish slapped his bike in frustration, knowing he just missed out.

I was very sorry about it but it was still an outstanding race for them both. Van Aert crossed the line with three fingers aloft. Cavendish can hold three fingers on one hand and four on the other if he chooses, which is wonderful. He won his second Green Jersey, a great souvenir of his outstanding Tour performance. He is the greatest sprinter of all time, it’s official!

Stage 20 – Tadej waits to start his time trial. He is in yellow and has been for so much of the race. He has made a remarkable start to his career, raced two Tours de France and won them both, not to mention his other achievements. This view shows just how young he is, but at just 22, he should have the prospect of a great career ahead.
The great thing for me as a fan, is that he isn’t the only one. The performances of Wout van Aert alone, show great strength, Jonas Vingegaard has been a revelation too. There seems to be a new generation coming through who are extraordinarily talented and young with it.
Exciting times ahead…

Stage 17 was a complicated one with lots going on – especially at the end – I’m still working on that! However, the stage also fell on Bastille Day and this image was lovely to make because two French riders from two French teams lead the race at least for a while.

The flag in the crowd was big, but I confess that artistic licence took over a bit here… One of my favourite paintings ever, is Delacroix’s ‘Liberty leading the people’ – and it has a great big flag which means so much to the French people, but to the wider world as a symbol of freedom in all forms.

Some days, just like the riders, you just have to go for it!

Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Victorious) in pursuit of David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) flying down a treachorous wet road – Colbrelli edged out Michael Matthews in the sprint but still not quite enough to catch Mark Cavendish for Green – yet. Possibly a more honest title would be Pyrenees deluge – it was very wet in the mountains yesterday. It was a long stage, with many facets to the racing – I chose to have a more experimental day artistically – by introducing oil pastel here and there over the dry watercolour for highlights – in others, applying the oil pastel first and using watercolour over the top as a resist. This one uses the pastel after the watercolour and pen have dried.

I am still working on some of them but this one conveyed how I imagined the conditions must have felt – it was unseasonably cold and wet – Hopefully, conditions will be better for them today.

The stage was taken in fine solo style by popular and talented rider Bauke Mollema – the Dutchman broke away from the rest of the breakaway group with 42km to go and won his second Tour stage with over a minute clear, a lovely ride. Cavendish completed before the cut-off time which is all I needed to know!

Now, it’s time to divert back to Wembley for a special football match tomorrow…

My pens are a-quiver!

Here is the group again, from the back – and against the light (contre-jour), which I love! Just played with the light and colour here and let the paint do its thing! You can see how the electric pink of Higuita’s jersey ‘ran’ to the left – When watercolour decides to do this, there isn’t much to stop it but I rather liked the effect here…

The first stage heading towards the Pyrenees – a tough four days ahead, no doubt. The pace is high, starting at the beginning with this man, Julian Alaphilippe – one of my favourites – He rides with great style and flair. Something of a swashbuckling approach, he’s never dull but rides most selflessly for his team when he needs to.

Definitely the approach of a musketeer!

This is a first response to Stage 13, which saw Mark Cavendish take his 34th stage win. It was not an easy victory – and very tight and technical all along – I have so many pictures I want to make from this stage, but football and the Pyrenees are calling, but this image is the first that I am pleased to publish – What a brilliant win!

Incredible – the best sprinter of all time!

With all the beautiful scenery and scent of lavender, it’s important to remember that there is a race on!

The stage was won by Nils Politt who took a solo victory, while Tadej Pogacar retained the leader’s yellow jersey.

Politt broke away clear with 12km left on the 159.4km run to Nimes after being involved in a long-range 13-man breakaway. It was great compensation for his team Bora-Hansgrohe, who had seen the retirement of team-mate and three-time world champion Peter Sagan prior to the start, through injury.

Sad for the Tour to lose Peter, but Nils was a delighted man and lovely to see him on the podium.

The last scenic painting for now but I really couldn’t resist this view – No mistaking where this is at all! We always think, traditionally, of sunflowers with the Tour de France – and of course, with good reason, but to suddenly see the lavender fields and this beautiful shot from the Tour camera of the peloton riding past these deep violet flowers was something I had to paint.

I can only imagine the scent as they rode past – possibly made everyone just a little drowsy – but must have calmed the nerves, if only for a few seconds?

After the drama of Mont Ventoux, Stage 12, seemed to be a day when the peloton took control and everyone slowed down a bit! Who could blame them?

Here is a gorgeous scene, typical Tour, with a lovely peloton, a beautiful day, a flag and a fan taking a photo – what more could we want? Perfection!

Mont Ventoux nearing the climax of the stage – The road was heaving with people, all the way up, more or less – Just a remarkable sight to see.

Here, I have juxtaposed two views of the same scene, looking straight up with the people – and also the view to the side where the blue sky meets the side of the mountain. You can make out shapes of flags and motorbikes but it was very dreamlike – to me only – I’m sure that the climb twice in one day was more than real to the riders!

Mont Ventoux as the riders reach the climb for the first time – This time high up through the branches of the pine trees, which do grow there, at least at this point. The climb leaves the trees behind the higher it goes.

Lots of people, motobikes, flags all the fanfare and hurrah as the Tour arrives on the mountain.. the first time.

Stage 10 saw the race resume in sunshine! A long stage and everything geared towards the sprinters and notably, Mark Cavendish – so much pressure for him to take another stage win and edge nearer to that magic target – He looked calm as he set out and set his stall out for the stage win by not going for the intermediate sprint.

The route passes through the area where the famous green-yellow drink Chartreuse originates, which seems highly appropriate today –

Even the landscape is a gorgeous mix of greens, as you can see…
